In this fantastic two-player game, you’ll try to surround your opponent’s insect queen using a variety of creatures from the natural world. Because each type of insect has its own specific way of moving around the hive, this game is sometimes called “natural chess,” although its simpler rules, lack of a game board, and three-dimensional nature make Hive a far more accessible and flexible game that you can play almost anywhere. It’s just great fun!
Hive is a highly addictive strategy game for two players that requires no game board and can be played on any flat surface. The game Hive consists of 28 pieces—14 black and 14 white—representing various insect creatures, each with a different type of movement. There’s no setup required; the game begins by placing the first piece on the playing surface. As you gradually add pieces, a pattern begins to form, and the playing area takes shape before your eyes. Unlike other games, your pieces aren’t removed from the board, and you don’t have to use all of them during the game. The goal of the game is to completely surround the opponent’s queen while also blocking the opponent as effectively as possible to prevent them from doing the same. The player who succeeds in surrounding the queen wins the game.
