Bathed by the crystal-clear waters of Cabo de Gata and under the white light of Andalusia stands Níjar, a small town in the province of Almería, Spain, with a pottery tradition dating back to the Bronze Age and which gained great significance during the Muslim period (10th–15th centuries).

In Níjar, we travel back to the 1920s, long before the tourism boom of the 1950s. The local economy revolved around ceramics, esparto weaving, and the making of jarapas, colorful textiles that remain a symbol of the region today.

Experience the charm of rural Andalusia: its narrow whitewashed streets, the rhythmic hum of pottery wheels at work, and skilled hands weaving esparto and jarapas, bringing color and life to the traditions of Níjar.

In the game, each player expands their workshop by adding new wheels to produce more pieces. Extract clay, throw pots, fire them, paint them, and sell your creations at the market.

Product detailed description

Under the bright Andalusian sun stands Níjar, a town in Almería with a pottery tradition dating back to the Bronze Age that flourished during the Muslim period.

In the 1920s, before the tourism boom, the local economy revolved around pottery and the production of esparto and jarapas, colorful woven fabrics that remain a symbol of the area.

The currency in circulation was the peseta, a tenth of which was known as the “perra gorda” (fat dog), so named because of the wear on the lion depicted on its obverse. At Perro Loko Games, we chose this unique coin for the game because of its historical significance.

Experience the charm of rural Andalusia, with its whitewashed streets, the sound of pottery workshops, and the skilled hands of artisans who bring the traditions of Níjar to life.

The game is played over three rounds with a decreasing number of craftswomen (7, 6, and 5). On your turn, choose one of the following options:

  1. Place a craftswoman: Place one additional craftswoman on a space to perform her action (the others return to their owners). This allows you to draw or play cards, obtain clay, throw pottery, fire pottery, paint, clean, sell esparto, or be the starting player.
  2. Discard a scoring card: Discard a final scoring card to perform any action.
  3. Selling at the market: Exchange up to two cooked items for victory points.
  4. Close Shop: If you run out of crafters, close your shop to earn bonus tokens for the next few turns.

Transform clay into art and fire into tradition. Only those who master the potter’s wheel and color will be remembered as the true master potters of Níjar!
