    Welcome to the 5th century BC, when the city-states of ancient Greece (poleis, singular: polis) were thriving centres of cultural and political life. Progress, destruction, bloodshed and glory coexisted at a time when Athens and Sparta clashed in a long struggle for supremacy.

    Just a few years earlier, the Persian Empire had come close to conquering the Greek poleis, which would have led to the loss of their identity and autonomy. Faced with this threat, a strong sense of Greek solidarity emerged, and with extraordinary will and determination, the Greeks fought together, under the leadership of the two leading poleis (Athens and Sparta), for their survival and managed to defeat their mighty enemy.

    Once the Persian threat had passed, differences of opinion over the governance of the city-states, the economy, the military and other aspects of society began to widen to such an extent that violence eventually broke out, and the struggle for power escalated into the Peloponnesian War.

    Polis is set in the 5th century BC. Here, two players take control of Athens and Sparta and attempt to expand their power and influence through diplomacy and force.

    In the game Polis, two players take control of Athens and Sparta and attempt to expand their power and influence through both diplomacy and force. They must forge alliances with other poleis and maintain them prudently. They must not squander resources or military strength if they are to keep the economies of the territories under their control running smoothly whilst simultaneously annexing new territories. The prestige of their confederacy of poleis and its growth are the key to victory in this struggle for supremacy.
