Souboj impérií (Imperial Struggle) is a two-player game depicting the clash between France and Britain in the 18th century. The game begins in 1697, when both empires are watching warily to see whom the King of Spain will name as his heir, and ends in 1789, when the new order stormed the Bastille. The game is not just about war: both France and Britain must lay the foundations for colonial wealth, negotiate with other European nations, and compete for glory in many different areas.

Imperial Struggle covers nearly 100 years of history and four major wars. Nevertheless, it is a moderately challenging game that can be played in a single evening. Imperial Struggle builds on its spiritual predecessor, Cold War, by moving further towards simple rules and accessible gameplay, whilst retaining its global scope and historical breadth within the confines of a single evening. During peace turns, players build up their economic interests and alliances, and capitalise on historical events represented by event cards. They must choose their investments wisely, whilst also ensuring they deny these opportunities to their opponents. During war phases, every battlefield can yield great rewards in the form of conquests and prestige, but territorial gains can vanish at the negotiating table. Will the British rule an empire on which the sun never sets by the end of the century? Or will France light the way for the world as the superpower of the Sun King’s dreams, or as Lafayette’s Republic?
