    The year is 1939. The United States has not yet fully recovered from the aftermath of World War I and the Great Depression, and clouds of a new war are gathering on the horizon as fascism gains strength even in the darkest corners of America. Gotham is also in the throes of economic and social chaos, compounded by a sudden surge in violent crime. Police Commissioner Gordon has his hands full with a wave of brutal murders of the city's leading figures. Into this chaos comes a mysterious vigilante, Batman, who offers the commissioner his help. All the evidence in the murder investigation defies logic—all the perpetrators died in the electric chair.
