America Jara and Bennett Beeny grew up as best friends and lead relatively carefree lives in a dangerous city where most people fear law enforcement officers more than criminals. However, their paths diverge over time, and while Beeny becomes a successful singer, Amerika feels an ever-increasing need to fight against an oppressive system in which freedom is nothing more than an empty concept. Amerika, a dark and complex story written by Dredd co-creator John Wagner and illustrated by Colin MacNeil, is considered one of the most important Judge Dredd comics. In this book, it is complemented by thematically related short stories written by Alan Grant (Lobo, Batman) and Garth Ennis (Preacher, The Gang) and drawn by John Higgins (Before Watchmen).
