"Dear reader, the book you are holding is a collection of many notes and sketches that I have personally made or managed to acquire during my many travels. I have a habit of collecting observations and information that have interested me in friendly conversations, so that they may serve as a source of inspiration and reflection for our descendants. Most of the handwritten notes served as the basis for my own grand work, my memoirs entitled Half a Century of Poetry. I would like to add, spitting in the face of false modesty, that all those who care about their reputation as educated and well-read people and who do not want to be branded as fools and country bumpkins should acquire this book. Those of you who are not yet familiar with this masterful work full of sharp wit, exciting adventures, and charming verses, can find it at the nearest quality literature merchant, or in the homes of your more cultured and demanding friends. However, many documents that I have gathered did not find their way into the aforementioned book. These are primarily texts written by persons other than myself, which I naturally could not include in my memoirs.
