Cognitive features used in Cortex Access+:

Attention and observation:
Use in the following tasks: Analysis - Squares - Rock, paper, scissors - Multitasking - Reasoning - Mazes - Coordination.
Players must focus and concentrate their attention to quickly and strategically examine (observe) the visual details presented (game pieces, squares, paths, etc.) without getting distracted. They must also focus on performing the correct action and completing more than two tasks or processing more than two pieces of information at the same time.

Impulsivity regulation and flexibility:
Use in the following tasks: Multitasking - Analysis - Squares - Rock, paper, scissors - Reasoning - Maze - Coordination.
Players need to step on the imaginary brake so they don't get too hasty and make unnecessary mistakes in their analysis, placement, staying on the right path or duplication (depending on the task). In the "advanced" level of the Coordination task, players must remember several different pieces of information without confusing them. Not acting impulsively is thus even harder. The Multitasking task tests players' ability to move from one task to another.

Short-term and working memory:
Use in the following tasks: Analysis - Squares - Rock, paper, scissors - Multitasking - Reasoning - Maze - Coordination.
Depending on the task, players must keep in short-term memory the number of squares already counted, gestures to imitate, incorrect paths out of the maze, etc. They must also distinguish correct information (and retain it) from incorrect information (which can be discarded from memory), and sometimes must process two instructions at the same time. This constant processing and adaptation requires players to use their working memory, which continuously updates the information in their short-term memory.

Imagination and motor skills:
Use in the following tasks: rock, paper, scissors - Multitasking - Coordination - Analysis - Squares - Reasoning - Mazes.
In reasoning, players use imagination to quickly find sequences, count blanks, rotate pictures, etc. They also have to imagine themselves performing the gestures they have identified in order to physically demonstrate them.

Counting:
Use in the following tasks.
Players must use their counting skills to perform the Squares task. They must also apply visual grouping strategies to speed up counting.

Anticipation, planning, organization and strategic flexibility:
Use in the following tasks.
Players must plan and organize manipulation and movements while using strategic flexibility to adapt as needed.

Motor skills, imagination and long-term memory:
Use in the following tasks.
Tactile cards engage the sense of touch. Players translate perceived information into imagination and then compare it to prior knowledge to recognize what they are touching.

Christophe Debien - Hospital Psychiatrist:
Playing may not heal, but it undoubtedly calms, strengthens and develops. This is probably why games are one of the many facilitation tools we use every day in our work with patients, whether to stimulate poor memory, improve impaired attention and projection skills or revive motor skills.
The new Access+ range of games not only introduces games suitable for carers and those they care for in a fun way. It brings so much more: it enables games to be used as part of care by adapting and changing them so that everyone - families, therapists and patients - can develop together.
