In a dystopian future, humanity’s faith had collapsed, and in an effort to understand society’s moral decline, a self-aware intelligence was created: a supermassive computer (SMC) called ‘Mother’, designed to mimic human thought and emotion and to simulate desires and ambitions. The citizens of Sapporo became the guinea pigs for this experiment. A series of government-mandated neural implant programmes, known as ‘harvests’, enabled Mother to gather data directly from the human brain. Mother eradicated crime, poverty and emotions – but also free will.

Only a handful of people managed to escape the Harvests. Among the outcasts – smugglers, criminals and rebels – heroes known as the Deckers rose up. These masters of hacking, deception and cyber warfare are determined to overthrow Mother.

Deckers is a game in which, within a relatively compact package, you become a hacker attempting (co-operatively or solo) to defeat a malevolent AI within a server environment. The game was created by Richard Wilkins, ‘Ricky Royal’.

In the game Deckers, you’ll hack into a network of five servers, either solo or cooperatively as a team of up to four players, who win or lose together.

The network is operated by one of several available supermassive computers (SMCs), each with a different level of complexity and its own unique defence system that you’ll have to overcome.

Once you connect to the servers, you’ll take on the roles of deckers, each with a special ability, and move through the server’s areas, uploading decker elements to the network to expand your control whilst removing as many SMC elements as possible. In each round, you’ll be given a new objective to try and fulfil in order to gain the upper hand. If you manage to fulfil the final objective, you will ultimately win.

The gameplay of Deckers is inspired by E Ghosts of the IslandE and E Mage KnightE , and is a sort of ‘pocket-sized’ variation on those games.
