Cang Jie is a famous personality of ancient China. As the legends say, he was inspired by the tracks of animals in nature and began to create various symbols, all based on natural shapes and motifs. He was trying to use symbols to replace the original way of remembering things, which he considered unreliable. For convenience, he named these symbols "Zi" which literally means "symbol". Hence the name of the play, as Cang Jie lived in the Han dynasty, or Hanzi means 'symbol of the Han dynasty'.
In Hànzì, players travel back in time 3,600 years and take on the roles of Cang Jie's disciples. They learn from their master to create new symbols to serve as the basis for modern Chinese culture. Players place double-sided cards on the table that show old traditional symbols on one, and new innovative ones on the other. They try to correctly assign a meaning to that old symbol in their turn. The first to score 10 points wins the game.
The game is designed for 2-5 players aged 7 and up.
