Formula D is a racing game similar to Formula 1 with high stakes, where players race in simulated cars and hope to cross the finish line first. It is a reissue of the game Formula Dé with several changes compared to the original format. While old tracks can be used with updated Formula D rules, the new game includes boards that have an F1 track on one side and a Street track on the other. Each of these street tracks has one or two new inclusions that add greater thematic depth -

The gameplay mechanics represent a simple race, be the first to cross the finish line! However, players must use a considerable amount of planning and rely on a fairly large dose of luck. Each player controls when to shift gears, with each gear providing a different speed. (For example, the 4th gear is a die that rolls random numbers from 7 to 12 for spaces moved.) In each turn, players can shift one gear, stay on it, or shift to a lower gear. This forces players to compare possible rolls with the optimal distance for that turn and perhaps even plan ahead. But it's not just about speed! Turns have a "stop" rule that requires players to stop once, twice, or three times in consecutive turns, otherwise they will be penalized. This creates effective speed restrictions in turns.

Formula D adds several elements that are not present in the original Formula De: It adds the excitement of illegal street racing in the streets of big cities - anything goes! This adds custom cars, nitro acceleration, drifting in turns, dirty tricks, shootouts, and road debris to add greater variability. The main change is the use of a "dashboard" with movable pegs to manage your car's attributes instead of paper forms from Formula De. There are also two sets of pre-painted cars available: a Formula 1 set and a Street Race production car set. Street cars come with "Character" profiles that add a bit of role-playing to the game. And finally, the old "Fuel" category for the car has been renamed to Gearbox Wear to better thematically match the effect of multiple downshifts.
