The sea level is rising, bringing unexpected twists in the form of the Waves expansion. This expansion introduces an element of unpredictability to your favorite card game, Sea Salt & Paper, thanks to 12 new event cards. Each round begins with the reveal of one of these cards, whose special rule immediately affects all players at the table. But the impact of events doesn’t end there—after scoring, the card goes to either the player with the highest or lowest score, for whom the rule continues to apply.

The expansion fundamentally transforms established strategies with new effects for paired cards. A pair of crabs now allows you to draw cards from both discard piles, while a pair of sharks lets you literally “steal” a pair of cards laid out by an opponent right before their eyes. If you manage to control the “Water Rodeo” with swimmers, you even gain the ability to peek at an opponent’s hand and swap a card with them.

For lovers of risk-taking and collecting, Wave Surge also introduces new point values and victory conditions. The value of shells can increase to 2 points, and octopuses become a valuable catch. The most important change, however, is the “Dance of the Mermaids,” which can reduce the number of mermaids needed for an instant win in the entire game from four to just three. Get ready—the path to victory will now require even more quick thinking and adaptability.
