A historical battle between two trading cities for two players.

In the 16th century, a small fishing village was founded in northern Germany. There seemed to be nothing special about it—except perhaps its proximity to the old Hanseatic city of Hamburg. People therefore began to call it "all too near," which, according to legend, became the name Altona. However, as Altona grew rapidly, fierce rivalry developed between the two cities, with both constantly striving to outdo each other by expanding their merchant fleets, manufacturing goods, and engaging in strategic legal disputes. When Altona was incorporated into Hamburg in 1937, the two cities had a long, intertwined history, with the fate of one often fundamentally influencing the direction of the other.

In the game City Clash, the fates of these neighboring cities are in the hands of the players, who strive to gain an insurmountable advantage for their city in one of four areas of success (prestige, lawsuits, ships, or alliances).

Whoever succeeds wins immediately. This creates an intense and suspenseful tug-of-war, where the key to success is not only the art of diverting attention, but also the ability to read your opponent's intentions and take advantage of opportunities that arise on the game board.

In Střet měst (Rival Cities), players take turns. On your turn, you move the ink bottle clockwise around the game board. You perform actions depending on which ink square you land on. Once a player moves the ink bottle past the bell, the game stops and the round ends. The other player then continues the interrupted turn.

The game ends after the round in which at least one end condition is met (but no later than after the 7th round).

However, the game usually ends earlier when one player achieves an immediate victory. This can happen in four ways:

- The player has 3 more ship cards than their opponent.

- The player has won their 3rd dispute card.

- The player has all 4 alliance cards.

- The prestige indicator has reached the name of the player's city at the end of the prestige scale.

Product detailed description

In the 16th century, two northern German cities compete for dominance over trade routes, alliances, and legal disputes. Build powerful fleets, control ports, and rewrite the history of the region in Clash of Cities, a strategic duel for two where wit, insight, and timing prevail.

Rival Cities is the ideal strategy game for 2 players aged 10 and up who enjoy tactical battles full of planning and surprising twists.

You should set aside about 60 to 90 minutes for one game, during which you will immerse yourself in the thrilling rivalry between Hamburg and Altona – two cities whose borders have often shifted over the centuries, not only physically but also politically. Thanks to its easy-to-understand rules and elegant gameplay, the game is suitable for both experienced players looking for a challenge and couples or friends who want to enjoy a duel with deep strategy and zero influence of chance.

Rival Cities takes you back to the 16th century, when a battle for commercial dominance broke out between Hamburg and Altona. Each player takes control of one of the cities and tries to gain superiority in one of four areas – prestige, litigation, ships, or alliances. There are several paths to victory, so it is essential to read your opponent's moves, recognize their intentions, and take advantage of the opportunities that gradually open up on the game board.

The game is based on a clever mechanism of moving an ink bottle across action fields, which determines what options you have on your turn. Each move has a cost—the further you go, the more you pay, but at the same time, you unlock more powerful actions. Balancing immediate gains with long-term strategy is the key to success. You never just "wait" on your turn—every move your opponent makes has a direct impact on your next decision.

In the game, you can produce goods, build factories, purchase ships, and form alliances with cities that bring you lasting benefits. When you can't agree amicably, lawsuits ensue, the course of which is influenced by your investments and your willingness to take risks. Whoever seizes the opportunity and achieves dominance in their chosen area will become the winner – whether through influence, trade, or intrigue.

  • A strategic duel that does not forgive mistakes and rewards thoughtful planning, each game offers a different rhythm and a new challenge.
  • Variable paths to victory allow you to choose your own style of play and adapt your tactics to your opponents' moves, ensuring high replayability.
  • The unusual mechanism of moving the ink bottle brings tension to every turn and forces players to think several steps ahead.
  • There is no element of chance – everything depends on your decisions, foresight, and ability to correctly assess the situation.
  • The historical setting of Hanseatic cities creates an atmosphere of real rivalry between trading powers.
  • Beautifully crafted components and detailed graphics transport players to a time when the economic power of Northern Europe was being formed.
  • Each round brings new possibilities – production of goods, trade, diplomacy, or legal battles – forcing you to choose between risk and reward.
  • A fast-paced but deep duel suitable for strategic players and partners looking for an intense experience for two.
  • The game develops logical thinking, planning, and the ability to respond to your opponent's moves without a single roll of the dice.
  • From the author of acclaimed strategy games such as Hansa Teutonica and Gugong – a guarantee of precise mechanics and clever design.

The game was created by Andreas Steding, a German game designer known for his precise strategies with a minimum of chance. His credits include titles such as Hansa Teutonica, Gùgōng, and For the Crown. The visual aspect was created by Annika Heller, a German illustrator who breathed the atmosphere of the 16th century into the cities of Altona and Hamburg with her detailed paintings and distinctive color palette. The game was released in 2025 by the German publisher Deep Print Games.
